A word finder, with context.
Top Words Like brings synonyms, opposites, definitions and examples together so you can make a more informed choice.
How to use it
Start with a word you know. Compare the alternatives, choose a meaning and check the definition. If a word is useful, bookmark it. Your wordbook stays in your browser, and you can copy or download it.
Not every connection is a synonym
Each result has a relationship label. Synonyms share a meaning in the source dictionary. Similar meanings are closely connected adjective senses. Related words can be broader ideas, narrower ideas or associated forms; they aren’t necessarily interchangeable. Opposite meanings are antonyms. The Synonyms tab includes both synonyms and similar meanings, with the distinction shown beside each word.
A word can have several meanings. Use the meaning and word-type filters to narrow the results. A dictionary can describe a word’s use, but the sentence still matters.
Dictionary sources
This edition contains 127,311 distinct searchable words and phrases, compiled from 135,969 lexical entries in Open English WordNet 2025. Open English WordNet is developed by the Open English WordNet team and derives from Princeton University WordNet.
Open English WordNet contributions are licensed under Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International. The underlying Princeton WordNet data retains its Princeton WordNet licence. Read the complete Open English WordNet licence and attribution.
We have normalised spelling keys, grouped lexical entries and indexed the data for search. The site presents selected word relationships and source examples. The collections are editorial selections. Pronunciation uses your browser’s speech service when available; it is not a phonetic recording from WordNet.
What’s included
The dictionary focuses on established vocabulary. Very recent slang, specialist terms and some proper names may be missing. If a search comes up empty, try a simpler form or browse by letter. The word of the day rotates through a selected list at midnight UTC.
About the writing guides
The writing tools contain original TopWordsLike explanations and example sentences: word comparisons, familiar word combinations, plain English alternatives and everyday idioms. They are a selected collection, separate from the sourced WordNet definitions. Examples illustrate usage; they are not quotations from a text corpus or frequency rankings.
Usage depends on context. A shorter phrase may need a grammatical change, and a word can have meanings beyond the ones discussed in a comparison. The guides explain these limits where relevant. Idiom notes describe tone and common sentence patterns rather than treating every expression as suitable for every situation.
